COMMON JUICE INCREASE THE RISK OF SKIN CANCER

STUDIES REVEAL THAT THIS COMMON JUICE INCREASE THE RISK OF SKIN CANCER

Recently, a study published by The Journal Of Clinical Oncology about the groups of people who have a higher risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, revealed a shocking discovery.

They find out that the most common breakfast beverage can increase the risk of melanoma.

When it comes to breakfast, grapefruit and orange juices are the most common choices in the morning. Many people can’t start their day without taking a sip of one of these beverages. They are delicious and also offer many health benefits. However, the latest study revealed that consuming these drinks in high amounts can increase the risk of melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer.

According to The American Cancer Society predictions 73 870 people in the United States will be diagnosed with melanoma this year, and about 10 000 of them will die from this cancer.

The biggest cause of melanoma is skin exposure and the ultraviolet radiation from the sun, UV lamps and tanning beds. Researchers discovered that the photoactive chemicals from citrus fruits such as psoralens and furocoumarins, can make the skin more sensitive to the UV radiation and sun exposure.

Dr. Shaowei Wu, of the Department of Dermatology at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence conducted the groundbreaking study. The study included around 100 000 people that were monitored from 1984 to 2010 and they were required to fill in detailed questioners about their lifestyle and diet every couple of years. They were especially questioned about their daily citrus intake.

The results were shocking. More than 1.800 people had developed melanoma, and the group that regularly consumed citrus fruits or juices had much higher risk of also developing this condition. The people that consumed orange juice daily had a 25% higher chance for melanoma than those who consumed it less than once a week. Also, people that ate grapefruits three or more times in a week, had a 41% higher risk of melanoma than those who didn’t consume grapefruit at all. Oddly, the results showed not even slightly increased risk for melanoma in those who drank grapefruit juice and consumed whole oranges.

Even though these results are shocking, the experts warn that it’s too soon to make any correlations and decisions. Several further studies must be conducted to confirm the correlation of citrus fruits and melanoma.

For now, experts don’t advise to change your orange or grapefruit consumption because they offer a lot of health benefits and can improve your health. However, you should be aware that there is a connection between melanoma and citrus fruits and be careful about sun exposure after consuming these fruits.
